5SOS’ Luke Hemmings on One Direction influence & ‘rewarding’ fans!

5SOS have admitted that their lives changed when they supported One Direction on tour for the first time.

The Australian band opened for Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik *sniffles* during their 2013 Take Me Home arena tour and as they travelled the world with the X Factor stars, bit by bit they started to find fame in their own right.

Very often support acts don’t achieve success for themselves or build a substantial fanbase as a result of opening some concerts for a bigger act, but 5 Seconds Of Summer managed to turn he opportunity into something golden for themselves.
Talking to Rolling Stone magazine, Luke Hemmings admitted that they were surprised as, bit by bit, they started toes fans turning up in 5SOS merchandise instead of 1D shirts. That’s when he knew the tide was changing. He explained:

“There was definitely a point where more and more people started paying attention to us and got more into our band after seeing us. Especially doing the first tour everywhere and then going on the second one and seeing more fans come out to see us as well as 1D, it was a rewarding to see it pay off.”

Luke added: “Doing all that touring and all that work, you could see it happen. People are wearing your shirts at the show and singing all of your songs even though it’s not your show. That was a cool moment. It was progressive and not just one moment where it happened.”

5SOS also supported 1D last year on their Where We Are stadium tour, however for 2015 they have their own stiff going on and the lads are now in the middle of the European leg of their Rock Out With Your Socks Out arena tour.

The boys have played in Glasgow and Belfast already this week.
